Urgel Delisle et associés Plans Expansion in MontérégieVerchères, Monday, April 8, 2002 - Bernard Landry, Premier of Québec and MNA for Verchères, Jean-François Simard, Minister for the Environment and Water and entrepreneur Urgel Delisle today announced plans to expand the company Urgel Delisle et associés (UDA). The expertise of UDA is well known in the fields of agriculture, forestry and the environment, and it is the only company in Canada that manufactures biopesticides using locally grown plants. The Fonds d’action québécois pour le développement durable (FAQDD), a partner fund of the Québec government, will provide $300,000 in financial support to the venture “This is excellent news, because this financial aid will help to enhance environmental protection while also promoting the local economy,” stated Premier Landry. “The innovation demonstrated by UDA gives it a unique position in Canada and has also drawn attention on an international scale.” UDA will use the FAQDD grant to conduct further technical studies on an acaricide/insecticide made from essential oils extracted from plants grown in Québec. The main objectives of these studies include identifying methods of use and the effects of the product on human health and the local environment and ecology. The initiative also targets the development of natural pesticides for use in protecting decorative and edible plants. “Today’s announcement helps to position UDA as a leader in the research and development of natural pesticides,” noted Minister Simard. “We are very proud of the forward-looking spirit of this Québec-based business.” Technological research and development is a primary orientation of the economic strategy of Québec with regard to the environment. The government of Québec made $45 million available to the FAQDD at the start of the 2000-2001 budget year for this purpose. A share of these funds has been allocated to research on environmental impact technologies as part of Québec's goal to remain a leader in the field of sustainable development.
